What is a caregiver?

Caregivers are professionals who, based on the authorized service, assist individuals in their area of assessed needs.  These areas could include “activities of daily living” such as dressing, grooming, eating, bathing, transfers, mobility, positioning, and toileting, as well as light housekeeping and meal preparation for adults and other health-related task.

Direct Support Professionals, including PCAs, are the backbone of Accra, providing a professional, compassionate level of care to our clients at home and in their communities

Accra’s Direct Support Professionals provide services in our PCA choice245D and Financial Management Services programs.

Home Health Aides provide personal care services under the direction of an RN Case Manager or Therapist.

They can work in the client’s home or at one of our assisted living facilities, and they provide a wide range of care.

Qualified Professionals are responsible for setting up PCA services with clients in our PCA choice program.

QPs help develop the care plan and assist in training, supervision and evaluation of services.

RN Case Managers plan, organize, direct and provide homecare services to clients in our Home Health Program.

Their drive to provide the best care to our clients sets them apart, and they are an integral part of the client’s care team.

PCA employment requirements

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, an individual who is employed as a Personal Care Assistant must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be employed by a PCA provider agency
  • Initiate and clear a criminal background study
  • Enroll with the DHS as a PCA once all employment criteria are met

A person  16 or 17 years old may be a PCA with the following additional requirements:

  • Employed by only one PCA provider agency responsible for compliance with current labor laws
  •  Supervised by a qualified professional every 60 days

An individual who is employed as a personal care assistant must:

  • Effectively communicate with the person and the PCA provider agency
  • Be able to provide covered PCA services according to the person’s PCA care plan
  • Respond appropriately to the person’s needs
  • Report changes in the person’s condition to the qualified professional
  • Maintain daily written records including, but not limited to, time sheets
  • Complete training and orientation on the needs of the recipient
  • Be supervised by the consumer or the qualified professional

Personal Care Assistance (PCA) and Community First Services and Supports (CFSS) training and test

The Minnesota Department of Human Services requires many of the people involved in PCA and CFSS to pass a test. These online tests are free.
