Toni Gains Consistency and Stability Through Accra’s PCA Choice Program

Watch Toni tell her story about the types of supports she receives from Accra PCA services.

“The PCAs help me live from morning to night,” says Toni Grundstrom, an Accra client of 10 years. Toni has been disabled for 37 years and works with two Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) each day. These caregivers, who are also family members, help her with everything from getting dressed in the morning to getting in bed at night and all of the activities of daily living (ADL) in between.

When Toni sought out a home care agency, it was important to her to find an agency that allowed her to control the types of supports she was receiving. Accra proved to be the perfect match.

“Accra is like the building block or cornerstone to be able to get the services and necessary supports that you need to help you get through your day,” Toni said.

Because Toni spends her days in a wheelchair, she needs appropriate support for various daily activities. Toni’s PCAs help her with everyday tasks like cooking, getting to appointments, and cleaning her home, as well as physical therapy exercises that improve her range of motion.

“All of the things that I wasn’t quite sure how to do, Accra helped me work into my care plan and then implement,” Toni said. “Accra’s PCA services have been integral for me to be able to live on my own.”

While the PCAs execute a lot of the daily tasks that are hard for Toni to do, she puts her energy toward working on activities she enjoys, particularly her stained-glass projects.

Before teaming up with Accra, Toni’s life felt unpredictable. She would plan her day around what she had energy for and how her symptoms were. Everything felt “iffy” and she lacked consistency and stability in her day-to-day life. Accra and her PCAs helped remove much of the uncertainty from Toni’s life.

“When you have a disability, you just don’t know what’s going to happen and Accra helps take the guesswork out of how my day is going to be.”
